Official Description & Notes
Welcome to Lecture 5 of the Network Security series.
Before cybersecurity professionals can effectively defend a network, they must understand how the Internet works. In this lecture, you'll learn the fundamentals of Domain Name System (DNS) and the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)—two of the most important protocols encountered during network monitoring, packet analysis, incident response, and threat hunting.
We'll examine how DNS translates domain names into IP addresses, how HTTP enables communication between web browsers and servers, and how defenders analyze both protocols to identify phishing attacks, malware communications, malicious domains, data exfiltration, and other suspicious network activity.
Understanding normal DNS and HTTP traffic is one of the first steps toward recognizing malicious behavior inside enterprise environments.
In This Lecture
Introduction to DNS
How DNS Name Resolution Works
Common DNS Record Types (A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, NS)
Recursive vs. Authoritative DNS Servers
Introduction to HTTP and HTTPS
HTTP Requests and Responses
Common HTTP Methods
HTTP Status Codes
Web Traffic Analysis Fundamentals
DNS and HTTP Indicators of Malicious Activity
Network Defense Best Practices
By the End of This Lecture, You Will Be Able To:
Explain how DNS converts domain names into IP addresses.
Describe the role of HTTP and HTTPS in web communications.
Understand the structure of HTTP requests and responses.
Identify common DNS record types and their purposes.
Recognize suspicious DNS and HTTP activity during network investigations.
Build a strong foundation for packet analysis and web traffic investigations.
DNS and HTTP generate some of the most valuable evidence available to cybersecurity professionals. Throughout this course, you'll use Wireshark and real packet captures to analyze web traffic, investigate security incidents, identify attacker behavior, and strengthen your network defense skills.
