Official Description & Notes
A recent investigation by Socket, reported by Tom’s Hardware, uncovered one of the largest GitHub supply chain campaigns seen this year.
Researchers identified 222 GitHub repositories, spread across 190 accounts, publishing more than 1,200 versions of a fake Go module — over 700 of them containing malicious code.
The campaign, known as Operation Muck and Load, used GitHub repositories that appeared legitimate to distribute trojans, infostealers, RATs and malicious PowerShell payloads.
This incident reinforces an important lesson:
Modern attackers don’t always target your infrastructure.
Sometimes they target the software your developers trust and install.
That is why Supply Chain Security, Software Composition Analysis (SCA), dependency governance and DevSecOps have become essential parts of modern cybersecurity.
